Ajax squad struggles against APOEL in Champions League qualifying game for 0-0 draw

Ajax, the semifinalist of the last year’s Champions League were faced with a tough opponent in form of APOEL Nicosia in their group stage game for the first leg of the playoffs as the game ended with a 0-0 draw on Tuesday.

Ajax took a strong start of the game by APOEL was also able to reach to point of winning the game in the last 30 minutes of the game. Still, the efforts of APOEL’s Andrija Pavlovic were halted by a splendid save from Andre Onana; goalie of Ajax.

Ajax had to play the last 10 minutes of the game with only 10 minutes following the yellow card ejection of Noussair Maraoui in the 80th minute.

Dusan Tadic, the captain and forward for Ajax team said, “We gave away the ball rather too easily. We need to improve for next week. I also expect the same defensive zone from APOEL In our 2nd game. However, we will try to play much better in the 2nd leg.”

The champions of the European Cup 4 times have to play for the qualifiers due to their low ranking in the Dutch League which they won in the last season. The proviso qualifying round was won by the Ajax after they defeated PAOK Thessaloniki by 5-4 on the aggregate.
