Atlético Madrid beats Barcelona by 3-2 to reach Final of Spanish Super Cup

The winner of the Spanish Super Cup will be decided by a Madrid derby that will be played in Saudi Arabia.

Atlético Madrid was able to make a late rally to score 2 goals to win over Barcelona by 3-2 in the semifinal game of Spanish Super Cup. With this win, Atlético Madrid will now be playing against Real Madrid in the final of the Spanish Super Cup that will be played on Sunday.

Real Madrid reached the Spanish Super Cup fain after defeated Valencia by 3-1 at the King Abdullah Sports City stadium in their Wednesday match.




Real Madrid and Atlético are the only ones to make it to the tournament this year because of the Final Four format presented by the Spanish soccer federation as a part of their 3-year deal for having this tournament in Saudi Arabia. Previously the only participants of the Spanish Super Cup were the champions of Spanish League last season Barcelona and the winner of Copa del Rey; Valencia.

Diego Simeone, coach for Atlético Madrid said, “We really deserved this win.  We were aware that all we need to be is patient as we were playing against one of the very best opponents in soccer. We had this feeling that if somehow we can tie this game, we can also win it and that is exactly what went down.”

Barcelona was in control for the most part of the game but the scoring board was opened by Atlético in the 20th minute of the 2nd half following a goal from Atlético’s Jorge “Koke” Resurrección.

Barcelona also started its rally only 5 minutes after that goal of Atlético with Messi’s goal. Barcelona was then in lead following a goal from Antoine Griezmann during 62nd minute.

After that Barcelona played in defense while Atlético looked for an opportunity which came in the 82nd minute resulting in a goal on a penalty shot by Víctor “Vitolo” Machín. After only four minutes of the game-tying score, Atlético’s game-winner was scored by Ángel Correa.
