Aviskha Fernando scores a century to lead Sri Lanka’s world cup win over West Indies

Avishka Fernando scored a century and with that, he became the 3rd youngest player to have scored a century in the world cup as Sri Lanka defeated the audience of West Indies such as Rihanna to win over them by 23 runs.

Avishka Fernando scored 104 runs off of his 103 balls to score the century at the age of 21 years and 87 days. The other two players before him to score centuries at a world cup at young ages were Irish player Paul Stirling and Australia’s former captain Ricky Ponting. Under the leadership of this young maiden century by Avishka Fernando Sri Lanka were able to win the match against the Windiest by 338-6 in a match held at Durham.

Among the audience was Rihanna, the Barbadian pop star as she was hoping that her team would be able to pull off an amazing victory for themselves even with them being disqualified of the semifinals.

Every Windies fan was confident in the team’s victory especially right after Nicholas Pooran scored 118 runs off of 103 balls to make his team stand at 199-6 as he scored his first ODI century.

But the left-handed batsman who stood for the 83 runs seventh wicket partnership with Fabian Allen was ousted of the pitch during the 48th over and that left Windies with 18 balls to score 31 runs to complete the chase. His wicket fell to the delivery of Angelo Mathews for whom this was his brutal first blow of the ODI career since 2017.

Ultimately Windies were not able to complete the chase as they stood at 4315-9 at the end of the allotted 50 overs. With this, they stood at the ninth place of the world cup table by winning only 1 of their 8 games.

As for Sri Lanka, for whom the hopes to semi-finals were completely extinguished especially after England defeated India on Sunday, they with their 3rd victory in a row stand at 6th place.
