Barcelona Open; Dominic Thiem wins the title

Dominic Thiem proved too good and too dominant for his Barcelona Open final’s opponent Daniil Medvedev on Sunday as he eased into a victory to win the title.

The Austrian player had an easy time as he cruised on his way to win the title by 6-4 and 6-0 at the Real Club de Tenis’s red clay court. With this, Thiem has now won 2 titles for this season with the first one being won at the Indian Wells last month.

Thiem who defeated Roger Federer at the Indian Wells and now Rafael Nadal in the semis to reach Finals of the Barcelona Open has become the first player ever to have defeated the King of Clay, Nadal four times. The only other player to have done so is Novak Djokovic.

Thiem said to the crowd after winning the title, “It is such an honor to have won this tournament. Looking back at the names who have won this tournament, I am so happy and proud that now my name is also there. I had some troubles at the beginning of our Match (against Nadal) but then I got better. I am glad that I made it work against him.”

Amazingly Thiem has not dropped a set during his run to win the Barcelona title. This was the 13th career singles title for the 25 years old Austrian and his 9th on the clay court.

As for the Hungarian open’s final, it was won by Italian player Matteo Berrettini who defeated Filip Krajinovic by 4-6, 6-3 and 6-1 to lift the trophy.
