Coco Gauff to clash against Naomi Osaka in 3rd round match of US Open

Coco Gauff, the teenage American sensation has managed to defeat her second-round opponent Timea Babos at the US Open by 6-2, 4-6 and 6-4 to set her 3rd round match with the defending champion and the world rank no. 1 Naomi Osaka.     

Gauff, the 15 years old qualifier of the Grand Slam event defeated her Hungarian opponent who is world rank no. 112 in 2 hours and 21 minutes long match. With this win, she has made history by becoming the youngest woman to have made it to the last 32 of the Flushing Meadows tournament.

The previous youngest female player to have archived this mark was Anna Kournikova from the US open of 1996.

Gauff, who is at her career-high world rank of no. 140 said, “it was really great. I thought for the first set that I was definitely in control. I second set, she raised her level and I was not able to finish the set. She played amazing and it ought that I too played great. This was a great match.”

She further said, “Being an American and to play in New York is amazing. I knew that I was going to be crowd favorite especially after the Wimbledon run.”

In other matches of the day, Caroline Wozniacki was also able to reach 3rd round by defeating American player Danielle Collins by 4-6, 6-3 and 6-4.

In the men’s singles, Nick Kyrgios had an easy win against Antoine Hoang 6-4, 6-2, and 6-4 to reach the 3rd round.

As for Rafael Nadal, he got a walkover tot eh 3rd round after his opponent Thanasi Kokkinakis withdraw from their 2nd round match following his injury of the right shoulder.
