Depay scores penalty to draw for Lyon by 1-1 against Zenit

In the opening game of the Champions League between Lyon against Zenit St. Petersburg, played at home for Lyon on Tuesday, Memphis Depay made a successful penalty during the 2nd half to draw the game for 1-1.

Zenit got their lead in the 41st minute of the game after a goal made by Serdar Azmoun before Depay got tripped on the edge from Zenit’s Magomed Ozdoev, who himself was the replacement for Azmoun.

The left winger got his penalty kick in the 50th minute to score a bottom left goal.

For Lyon, this match was tough one as they had gone close to winning the game by a header from Marcelo during eh 1st half and also could have won the game if shot from Jeff Reine-Adelaide hadn’t went wide.

With a goal by Azmoun, he has now become the first player of this season of Champions League to have scored their first goal. He suffered an injury during the second half.

He is also the first player this season, whose goal has been reviewed by the VAR system that dismissed the protest raised by Lyon for the offside goal. The VAR system had only been used in the last season’s knockout rounds and this Tuesday, it made its debut early during the group stage.
