Fed Cup; Romania into semi-finals along with France, Belarus and Australia

On the quarterfinals of the Fed Cup on Sunday, Romania upset the defending champion the Czech Republic as they advanced to the semifinals of the event along with France, Belarus and Australia.

For the first time, Romania has managed to reach the last four of the event after their first victory against the Czechs’ who previously won the title six times in the last 8 years.

Irina-Camelia Begu and Monica Niculescu from Romania teamed up to beat the best of five contest against Czech pair Katerina Siniakova and Barbora Krejcikova in the doubles to win by 6-7 (2-7) 6-4 6-4.

This was after Simona Halep defeated Karolina Pliskova and before Siniakova’s win over Mihaela Burzanescu to make the score 2-2. The match then only hinged on the results of the doubles match which Romania won.

The same was the case for Australia’s 3-2 win over the USA as Ash Barty and Priscilla Hon defeated Danielle Collins and Nicole Melichar by 6-4 7-5 in the deciding doubles.

The Australians are bidding for their first title since 1974, will play against Belarus next at home in April.

As for France, the 3-0 lead was clinched by Caroline Garcia as she won over her opponent from Belgium, Elise Mertens by 6-2 6-3 to set up a semi-final match against Romania.
