Kim Clijsters, the former world no. 1 announced a shocking comeback at age 36 to tennis

Kim Clijsters, who was the former world rank no. 1 recently announced her comeback to the sport of tennis in shocking news at age 36. She is making her comeback after having a 7 years hiatus from the sport.

The Belgian tennis star who first made her return to the competitive tennis following a 2 years break after having her first child, is now starting her training with a plan to be in the Tour of 2020.

After her first return to the sport, Clijsters had won three titles of Grand Slam events before making a full retirement from the sport back in 2012. According to news, Clijsters is making her return to the sport as she seems to be impressed and inspired by the achievements of a fellow mother in tennis, Serena Williams.

Clijsters, who is now a mother to 3 children said, “At age 36, I feel like that I am too young to be retiring and now with so many inspirational athletes who are mums, I feel like I should also make a comeback. I cannot wait to see myself be back on the court again and see as to what is really possible after being a mother of 3.”

The first Grand Slam title which Clijsters won was back in the US Open held in 2005. After the birth of her first child, Clijsters went on to win her 2nd title at the Flushing Meadows but before then she defends her title in the US Open of 2010 and then went on to win the 2011’s Australian Open title.

Clijsters has won 41 singles titles during her career and is currently eligible for having unlimited wildcard entries at the WTA Tournaments.  She only needs to play in 3 tournaments or earn herself 10 ranking points to establish her ranking once more.

CEO and Chairman of WTA, Steve Simon said, “Kim Clijsters is one of the greats in the tennis and for her to make a comeback to Tour is really good news for WTA and also the tennis facts across the globe.”
