Madrid holds Barcelona to 0-0 draw in Spanish League game amid protest at the Camp Nou

The Wednesday night game of the Spanish League held between Real Madrid and Barcelona was held to 0-0 draw for the frit time in the last 17 years. The reason for this draw for the first time in the last 2 decades was the large separatist protest that turned really violent outside of the Camp Nou stadium.

As for the game taking place inside the stadium, it took place without having nay big incidents, neither on the field nor in the stands. However, outside on the streets, the police and the rioting protestors clashed with each other as the trash cans were set on fire.  The smell from these burning trash cans reached the stadium’s stands during the final minutes of the Spanish league game.

With this draw, both these teams are now locked for points to have the top spot of the Spanish League with Barcelona leading with goal difference.  This was the first-ever scoreless match between these two fiercest rival clubs since the November of 2002.

Despite the surety from police, the fear was there that the match could be delayed or interrupted entirely by the protestors so both teams arrived at the stadium ground on time while having a heavy police escort.

Zinedine Zidane, the coach for Madrid said, “Everything went really well for Barca and also for Real Madrid and for the game of football.  So we can all be very happy.”

The game had to be halted for a minute after some spectators threw inflatable beach balls on the side of the pitch while they shouted chants of Independence. These spectators were cleared swiftly from the stands.

The public speaker of the stadium also asked the crowd of 100000 to not use the exit on one end of Europe’s biggest stadium all because of security concerns.

Ernesto Valverde, the coach for Barcelona said, “with the tensions that the game already had, I saw few yellow balls but not too many of them. We tried to treat this as normally as we could. People did protest but nothing more.”
