Matteo Berrettini reaches semis of the US open by beating Gael Monfils

Matteo Berrettini holds the title for now being the first-ever Italian player to have made it to the semifinal of the men’s singles at the US Open since 1977. He defeated his quarterfinal opponent Gael Monfils in thrilling 5 sets.

24th seeded Berrettini was able to defeat Monfils by 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, and 7-6 under the scorching condition of the Arthur Ashe stadium.

23 years old Berrettini was able to defeat the longest and the epic contest of his career after 4 hours. Berrettini said after his win, “Right now I don’t even remember any points. I only remember the match point. While I was playing I thought to myself that this was one of the best matches I ever saw. I was playing but I was also watching my own play.”

Berrettini had 15 aces along with 53 winners while making a total of 63 unforced errors.  As for Monfils, he had 51 unforced errors while having 17 double faults.

Monfils said that he would be staying at the Flushing meadows for at least one more day. He said, “I wish I could have won this match but I also love those matches no matter what. You know I am proud of my girl and I will be happy to cheer for my girlfriend’s match tomorrow.”
