Miami Open: Johanna Konta out of the tournament

Johanna Konta got an out of the Miami Open for ht third round match against Wang Qiang after losing 10 straight games by 6-4 and 6-0.

The British no. 1 Konta managed to make it through her first round match against the American player Jessica Pegula in straight sets during their match on Thursday and she started well off against the 18th seeded player.

Konta, who was the champion of the tournament in 207 when it was held in Crandon Park, got a lead of 4-2 but later on, under Qiang’s rampage, she rumbled hard.

Qiang, the Chinese no. 1 managed to pick off in her next opening set serve as Konta blew her chance of breaking a serve and her 5-4 lead.

Qiang solidified on her serve as she went on to win the next 7 games to claim her victory as well as her third-round match against Serena Williams. Serena Williams earlier defeated Rebecca Peterson by 6-3, 1-6 and 6-1 to make it into the third round.

Williams, who has won the Miami Open 8 times in the past, played poorly at the start and was broken by her opponent nearly 3 times. However, she managed to pull herself together in the final set to avoid the defeat like last year. In 2018, she lost to Naomi Osaka in their second-round match.

As for Osaka, the winner of last 2 Grand Slam of the year and currently ranked world no. 1, she also had to play a tough match as she managed to defeat her opponent Yanina Wickmayer by 6-0, 6-7 and 6-1.

Osaka said, “It is a little tricky to get used to a new stadium. For me, it gets better as the time progresses.”

As for the Indian Wells champion Bianca Andreescu, she also made it to the third round after defeating Sofia Kenin.
