Milan suffered worst Serie A loss in last 21 years as Atalanta wins by 5-0

AC Milan suffered its one of the worst defeats in Serie A as they lost to Atlanta by 5-0. This is the fourth time in the history of AC Milan that they have lost a game of Serie A by a margin of 5 goals. Their last such defeat was against Roma back in May of 1998.

Stefano Pioli, coach for AC Milan said, “We got the whole interpretation of the match wrong. We faced the team in the wrong way and it became difficult for us to change our attitude in the game alter on. On a technical level and the physical level, Atlanta played better than us.”

He further said, “This defeat that really hurts us. We are responsible for our own performance and today we played well below our best level.  A game like this should not be allowed to ever happen again.  We have to put in the performances on the pitch worth of the shirt that we wear.”

With this win, Atalanta now moves to 5th place and is only 4 points behind the 4th placed Roma to acquire a berth for the Champions League as they now head to mid-winter break. As for Milan, they are now 10 points beneath Atlanta at the 10th place.

Atlanta was able to break the scoring deadlock between two teams in the 10th minute of the game as Alejandro “Papu” Gomez scored the first goal.

In the 61st minute, Mario Pasalic scored the 2nd goal against his former team and then Josip Ilicic made the score 3-0 in the following minute.

Ilicic scored another goal to double his tally and the scoreboard to read 4-0 as the whole defense and offense of Milan broke down as the substitute player for Atalanta Luis Muriel scored the final and 5th goal of the night.
