MLB Hall of Famer and San Francisco Giants great; Will McCovey dies at age 80

One of the greatest left hand hitters in the history of Major League Baseball, Will McCovey has died at the age of 80 years old on November 1st, 2018.

McCovey was inducted into the MLB Hall of Famer in 1986. He maintained a formidable partnership with the Willie Mays in San Francisco Gaits for more than a decade.

In his 22 season career in which he also played for teams like San Diego Padres and Oakland Athletes, he scored 521 home runs.

In recognition to his services to the San Francisco Giants, the team named the China Basin Area located at the left-field as the new AT&T Park McCovey Cove. A statue has also been erected at the cove for praising him.




He was named as the National League Rookie of the year back in 1959 and also secured the Most Valuable Players honor back in 1969 along with being the All-Star for six times. He also won the All-Star MVP honors in 1969.

Rob Manfred; Major League Baseball commissioner said in honor of McCovey, “Willie McCovey was one of the greatest power hitters of our game. He won the MVP honors in 1969 alongside the Alabama native Willie Mays and was the part of Giants memorable teams. For spectacular 22 years and after retiring for many years, he was the superb ambassador for the Giants and to the game”.

He further said, “on behalf of all the MLB, I send my deepest condolences to Willie’s family, friends and to all the fans of Giants”.
