Nazem Kadri of Colorado Avalanche stands up for his injured teammate as he pummels Ryan Lindgren of New York Rangers

One of the main reasons that there is fighting allowed in ice hockey is to send anyone a message that hits someone’s teammate.

And that was exactly what Nazem Kadri of the Colorado Avalanche did to Ryan Lindgren of New York Rangers. Lindgren had apparently inured Colorado Avalanche’s Joonas Donskoi with a massive hit alongside the boards as the forward brought the punch in the zone during the 1st quarter of Colorado Lindgren VS New York Rangers game.

Kadri, who is already leading the Avalanche with his 60 minutes in penalties, headed into this game and got the attention of Lindgren by cross-checking him in his back.

While Lindgren was able to drop off his gloves, he still could not do much in the fight while Kadri did land many punches that left Lindgren bloodied.

Kadri then received an instigator penalty along with more than 5 minutes for his fighting as well as for misconduct for a total of 17 penalty minutes.

As for Lindgren, he was then ruled out or the rest of the game due to an upper-body injury and they left the New York Rangers to play without their 5 defensemen.  The game still ended in a 5-1 victory for the Rangers. Donskoi was also not able to come back on the ice for the rest of the night.

Jared Bednar, the coach of Avalanche had no update on Donskoi’s condition. He said, “The news is obviously not good if he could not make it back for the rest of the game.”

NHL also held the hearing on Lindgren on Wednesday after the game but they decided against a supplemental discipline.

NHL’s Department of Player Safety said, “While there was significant head contact on this play, Lindgren took a proper angle of approach, did not extend outward or upward and hit through Donskoi’s core.”
