New road world record set by Joshua Cheptegei for over 10km

Joshua Cheptegei of Uganda was able to set up a new 10 Km road world record as he bested the proviso record holder Leonard Komon of Keya in Valencia.

Joshua Cheptegei, who has previously won the 10000m world title in Doha earlier this year at the track, was able to set the new world record for 26 minutes and 38 seconds in Valencia, Spain. He improved he world record set by Komon back in 2010 by a margin of 6 seconds.

For Uganda, native this was a great way to cap the year as he was also able to win back in March the IAAF World Cross Championships held in Denmark.

Joshua Cheptegei said of his achievement, “What a great year this has been.  I cannot believe it. I knew that Valencia was going to be a really fast course which is one of the fastest in the whole world. So to be able to achieve what we came here to achieve is a really special thing.  This year had made me really happy.”

Joshua Cheptegei was able to reach the halfway mark at 13:23 and the world record was within his reach as he made it to the 8 k mark at a time of 21:37.

He was able to break the record by completing the final kilometer of the race in 2 minutes and 45 seconds.
