Positive Spirit falls right out of the gate at the start of Kentucky Oaks Derby

The Kentucky Oaks derby took a frightening turn of events when the horse Positive Spirit fell right at the start of the race.

Positive Spirit, running out of the no. 6 posts was in between the Jaywalk and Flore de La Mar of the Post 7 and Post 5, as it clipped its heels with Jaywalk. Following this sudden clipping, Positive Spirit fell dramatically on the ground but then quickly got back up on her feet.




As for Jaywalk, he was disqualified, despite finishing the race at the 6th place under the rule of “coming in and taking the path” of the Positive Spirit.

Positive Spirit’s jockey Manny Franco also fell on the ground but neither the jockey nor the horse was seriously injured. According to media, Franco later told that he was OK.

According to media, the Positive Spirit which was trained by the trainer named Rodolphe Brissett might have suffered from the soft tissue injury as well as skin lacerations. However, even after the accident, she was able to walk out of the barn without having any difficulty.

As for the 1-1/8 mile Grade 1 stakes race for the 3 years old horses, it was won by Serengeti Empress. Following in 2nd and third place were Liora and Lady Apple respectively.

According to the trainer of Serengeti Empress named Tom Amoss, he was distracted for a few moments by the fall of Positive Spirit as she kept her eyes on both Franco and Positive Spirit. After both Positive Spirit and Franco got back up, he turned his attention back on his own horse who won the race moments later.
