Roger Federer to play on clay at this year’s Madrid Open

Roger Federer is going to make a return to the Caja Magica where he will play o the clay for the first time in the four years at the Madrid Open.

Federer, the Swiss player has already won the event three times in the past; winning it back in 2006, 2009 and 2012. However, in order to manage his busy schedule, Federer has missed out for two years straight paying on the clay court but now he will be making his return.

After being beaten by Stefanos Tsitsipas in the last sixteen of the Australian Open, Federer hinted that he might make a return to the clay court. This is why; this latest announcement from Federer holds a little surprise for the fans.

Feliciano Lopez; the Madrid Open tournament directors said, “Federer is one of the greatest payers in the history of tennis. We are happy for his return to the Madrid and consider it as a gift for the tournament. Above anything else, it is great for fans that will get to see a unique player. Having him see at the clay with like of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal is something that is unmissable for the fans of tennis.”

The world no. 1 Djokovic and 11-time French Open title winner; are also likely to make an appearance at the Madrid Open which will be played from March 3rd to March 12th.

Federer, in his career, has amassed over 11 titles on clay which includes his 6 ATP Masters 1000 Crowns and a Grand Slam title win at Roland Gross back in 2009.

He might have slipped back to worked rank no. 7 but he seems set to play in the French Open for the first time since 2015.
