Rohit Sharma scores his 5th World Cup century as India claims their 7-wicket win over Sri Lanka

In a match held at Headingley between India and Sri Lanka, Rohit Sharma led his team with his record 5th century in this World Cup as India won over Sri Lanka by 7 wickets. With this win, they have avoided a meeting with England in the semifinals and will now instead play against the 4th place New Zealand.

Rohit Sharma scored 103 runs off of his 94 balls which follow his previous centuries in matches against South Africa, England, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.

With this record of 5 centuries in this tournament, he overshadowed the performance of Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara who back in 2015’s World Cup scored 4 centuries in matches of his team against New Zealand and Australia.

Sharma was also able to take the mantle of being the highest scorer in this tournament from Shakib Al Hasan of Bangladeshi team as he shared the opening wicket stand for 189 runs with KL Rahul. Rahul also scored himself a ton with his total score being 111 runs.

Under this splendid opening wicket partnership, India was able to cruise to the victory with 6.3 overs of the inning to spare. After Rishabh pant was reviewed for an lbw after making 4 runs, Virat Kohli with his 34 runs and Hardik Pandya with his 7 runs were able to steer their team’s win.

India had a thumping win in contrast to the other last match of the knockout stages being played between Australia and South Africa. Australia got defeated by Proteas, leaving India to be at the top of the World Cup table.

With this win, India will now take on the fourth place New Zealand for the first semifinals match of the World Cup that will be held at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

As for Rohit, he is already planning to break another record which is for the most runs scored in a single World Cup tournament. The record is already held by a former Indian batsman, Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 673 runs back in 2003’s World Cup, held in Africa.
