Serena Williams makes it to the quarterfinal of the Rogers Cup in Toronto

Serena Williams in her third-round match in Toronto, Canada for the Rogers Cup defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia by 7-5 and 6-4 to make it to the quarterfinals of the tournament.

She was playing her first tournament after losing the finals of Wimbledon. She opened with a victory against Elise Mertens by 6-3 and 6-3. 37 years old Serena has won the Roger Cup titles back in 2001, 2011 and 2013 which were all played in Toronto.

Next Serena will face the 8th seeded player Naomi Osaka who earlier defeated the Polish qualifier named Iga Swiatek.

In other matches of the day, world rank no. 3 Karolina Pliskova from the Czech Republic also moved into the quarterfinals after winning over Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit by 6-3 and 7-5.
