Under-20 World Cup; US Loses the opening match against Ukraine by 2-1

Denys Popov of Ukraine scored a goal via a header in the 51st minute of the game to lead his team’s victory over the US by 2-1 on Friday in the opening match of the Under-20 World Cup which was held at Bielsko Biala, Poland.

Ukraine had an early lead in the 21st minute after Serhii Buletsa scored a goal. Serhii Buletsa was given a pass from Heorhii Tsitaishvili.

Sergino Best, defender of Ukraine went up with Buletsa but could not get his header which then bounced off to the net.

Buletsa ran after the ball and volleyed it past the US goalkeeper to score the goal from 10 yards away.

The score was tied 6 minutes after by US’s Brandon Servania in a swift series of passes.

Dest then played the ball in front of Servania who then passed it on to Konrad De La Fuente as Dest himself moved near the penalty area. De La Fuente again passed the ball to Dest who then passed it on to the left flank to Tim Weh.

From Weh, the ball was passed to the unmarked Servania and he poked the ball into the goal with a right kick from 5 yards away.

As Servania made a bow and arrow in celebration, his team mobbed him and then air sparred with Chris Gloster.

Next, US will play against Nigeria on Monday and will look to close the group stage with a match against Qatar on 30th May.

In the past, Americans have been eliminated twice from the quarterfinals back in 2015 and 2017.
