Australian Open; Johanna Konta and Serena Williams reach second round

Johanna Konta of Great Britain defeated her opponent Ajla Tomljanovic after a deciding tie-break. With this win, she has become the third British player to have reached the second round of the Australian Open.

Earlier this month, Konta lost to Tomljanovic in Brisbane but in this match, she overcame her opponent by 7-6, 2-6 and 7-6.

The match was thrilling s both opponents were matching each other but Konta who was a little bit more aggressive than her opponent gained first-to-10-points tie break to in the match. With this win, she is now the second British player who has won the match using this new format other than Katie Boulter.

27 years old Konta slipped from her world ranking no. 9 to 39 after a difficult 2018 where she experience burn out in the final months of the previous season when she managed to reach the semi-finals of Wimbledon.

The improvement in Konta’s game has been vivid after she teamed up with her new coach Dimitri Zavialoff, a Frenchman who guided Stan Wawrinka for much of his career.

On the other hand, Serena Williams managed to win her first round against Tatjana Maria in under 49 minutes.

37 years old Serena Williams has come into this tournament hoping to match the record of Margret Court for 24 Grand Slam crowns. Serena is making a return to Melbourne after she won the tournament back in 2017 while she was eight weeks pregnant. This time she defeated her German opponent by 6-0 and 6-2.

Williams will now face Eugenie Bouchard for their second-round match.

Czech seventh seed Karolina Pliskova has also safely progressed into the second round of the tournament.
