Goerges reaches Luxembourg quarters; Svitolina loses at Kremlin Cup

In the 2nd round match of the Luxembourg Open in January, Julia Goerges, the defending champion of the tournament was up against Sorana Cirstea. Sorana Cirstea was down by a set before she made a rally to win over her opponent by 4-6, 6-4 and 6-4 on Thursday. With this win, Sorana Cirstea reaches the quarterfinals of the Luxembourg Open.

In her quarterfinals match, she will be facing Monica Puig, the Olympic champion, who defeated Czech Republic’s Kristyna Pliskova by 7-6, 3-6, and 7-6 in a match that was played for 2 hours and 50 minutes.

In other matches of the Luxembourg Open, Elise Mertens, the top seed of the tournament lost against Jelena Ostapenko by 4-6, 6-2 and 6-2.

Somewhere else at Kremlin Cup, the tops seed of the event Elina Svitolina lost her first-round match. Elina Svitolina was up against Veronika Kudermetova, as she was beaten by 6-2, 1-6 and 7-5.

With this Veronika Kudermetova will now be moving to the 2nd round of the event where she will face Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

As for the 2nd seed of the tournament, Kiki Bertens, she defeated Kaia Kanepi 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 to make it to the season-ending WTA Finals.

If Bertens and Belinda Bencic are able to reach the final of the Moscow Open, they will be able to take the last WTA Finals spot from Serena Williams.

Bertens will next face Kristina Mladenovic who earlier won her match against Anastasija Sevastova by 7-5, 3-6 and 6-3.
