Wimbledon 2019; player seeding in the tournament, Rafael Nadal seeded below Roger Federer

Rafael Nadal, despite being above Roger Federer on the ATP world rankings has been seeded below Roger Federer for the Wimbledon tournament.

Nadal has been seeded as 3rd on the upcoming Grand Slam of the year while Federer has been seeded as 2nd despite being 3rd on the world rankings.

Wimbledon is the only tournament of the year in which players are seeded on the basis of their previous performance at this tournament which means that the ATP and WTA rankings are not usually followed.

The current world rank no. 1 Novak Djokovic is currently the top seed of the tournament as he won Wimbledon last year.

As for the women’s singles of Wimbledon, Ashleigh Barty has been ranked as the top seed which mostly mirrors the ranking of WTA this year. Naomi Osaka is the second seed, Karolina Pliskova being third with the defending champion Angelique Kerber being the fifth-seeded player.

The most surprising seeding of the men’s singles is of Nadal which means that he is going to face Djokovic in the semifinals instead of the finals of both players should progress up to that point.

The two-time Wimbledon champion, Nadal earlier this week complained on Spanish TV station #Vamos where he said, “Wimbledon is the only tournament of the year which does not follow the world rankings. It is their choice but at the end of the day, whether I am seeded third or the second, I have to play my best level to reach the goals I aspire to. Still, it is better to be second that be third but if they consider this, I will accept it. I do not think that it is a good thing that Wimbledon is the only tournament with their own seeding formula.”
