Kovalev VS Alvarez; Sergey Kovalev beats Eleider Alvarez in rematch by unanimous decision

In a rematch fight for the WBO light heavyweight title, Sergey Kovalev managed to defeat his opponent Eleider Alvarez by unanimous points decision in Texas on Sunday morning.

35 years old Kovalev controlled the pace of fight from the opening bell as the two judges scored Kovalev for 116-112 whilst the third judged did not even gave Alvarez a single round scoring the fight at 120-108.

Kovalev was aggressive throughout the fight as he landed 213 punches to Alvarez’s 111 punches who suffered his first defeat of the career.

For Alvarez, the best round was the7th when his punches left Kovalev staggering on the canvas on what seemed to be weak legs.

However, Kovalev managed to regain his composure in the 8th round. Kovalev was in control again during the 10th round as he landed a stiff right-left combination to drain Alvarez of what little energy he had remaining.

Alvarez’s corner told him that he can only regain his belt by a knockout during the tenth round but he never even came close to finish the fight with a knockout as a right hand fell upon him by Kovalev just before the bell rang.

Kovalev, after the fight, praised his team and his trainer Buddy McGirt.

Kovalev said, “They stopped me from overtraining. I saved my energy and I am happy that I did. We worked on my jab and my jab alone.”

As for Alvarez, he said, “I have no excuses to make. I knew he would be the favorite of it when it went to decision. I don’t see myself as a loser but he is the winner of tonight’s fight.”
