Messi helps as Barcelona defeat Lyon by 5-1 to reach the CL quarters

Just when the crowd of Camp Nou was getting nervous, Lionel Messi helped the Barcelona team turned what was a really close game.

Messi managed to score 3 goals before helping two other Barcelona teammates to score two goals as they defeated Lyon by 5-1 on Wednesday.

With this win, Barcelona has cruised into the Champion League’s quarterfinals. This is the 12th consecutive time for the Barcelona as they will be playing in the quarterfinals.

Barcelona was at 0-0 in the first leg but then Luis Suarez helped his team to go by 2-0 until the halftime as he earned a penalty which was converted by Messi and later set up Phillippe Coutinho for scoring a goal.

As for Lyon, they were given hope in the 58th minute of the game after Lucas Toustart scored a goal when Barcelona failed to clear his corner kick. Lyon only had to score one more goal to make it through but Messi again scored a goal in the 78th minute to round off a big win for Barcelona.

Messi said, “We suffered very unnecessarily for most of the first quarter but then made it 2-1. We only made things complicated for us by letting the guard down. After the score was 3-1 we were finally calmed down.”

These two goals from Messi was actually his seventh and eighth goal in this season of Champions League. As for all the games he had played with Barcelona in the Champions league this makes his core tally at 36 goals.

The win also allows Barcelona to set a record of 30 straight home wins without a single loss since September of 2013.

As for the quarterfinals draw, it will be on Friday.

Bruno Genesio, the Lyon coach said, “When Messi is on the field and playing at this level, it is simply impossible to stop him. That third goal completely broke us.”
