Loek van Mil, the 7 feet and 1 inch tallest baseball player ever died in a ‘fatal accident’

Loek van Mil, the former pitcher of a Dutch baseball team and one of the tallest baseball professional players recorded at a height of 7 feet 1 inch died, after sustaining injuries in a fatal accident, on Sunday. The news was announced by the Royal Dutch Baseball and Softball Association KNBSB. Loek van Mil was only 34 years old at the time of his death.

A director for the KNBSB Association named Tjerk Smeets said that the no further details or explanations can be provided on the death of Loek van Mil as per his family’s request.

Loek van Mil was admitted back in December in a hospital in Australia in stable yet critical condition. He had sustained injuries to his head in a hiking trip. According to media Loek van, Mil was involved in a hiking accident that caused his head to be hit with a rock and he laid there unconscious for about 24 hours. The hike Loek van Mil took was in Canberra, Australia. In this fatal accident, Loek van Mil sustained injuries like multiple fractures to the head along with hemorrhaging and bleeding of the brain.

Loek van Mil had already announced his retirement from the sport this month and he was on road to recovery from his accident.

At height of 7 feet and 1 inch, Loek van Mil tied with the prospect of Arizona Diamondbacks’ Ryan Doherty for being the tallest baseball player in the history of the sport.

In his career which spans for 388 professional baseball games; Loek van Mil threw for 516 1/3 innings with an ERA of 3.12.

He had also played for the national team of Netherlands in his career and made appearances at the World Baseball Classic back I 2013 and 2017.
